Welcome to the UCLA Office of Campus and Community Safety! Whether you are returning to campus or arriving for the first time, we are very glad to have you here. This guide provides an overview of how to maintain personal safety on campus (and off), and we invite all students, parents, faculty and staff to review our many resources.
Navigating campus life within a large metropolitan city means that each of us needs to take steps to be vigilant of our personal safety.

Campus Safety Checklist
Here are some key habits that help promote safety on campus:
- Bookmark Bruins Safe Online for important campus safety and operational updates. Students, staff and faculty are automatically enrolled in BruinALERT emergency notifications; parents are welcome to sign up, as well.
- BruinALERT is our way of passing along urgent safety information. If you receive a BruinALERT on your mobile phone or by email, please focus on these instructions.
- Don’t walk alone at night. UCLA offers safe walk and travel options: Community Service Officers are available to walk with students from dusk until 1 a.m., 365 days a year, as part of the Evening Escort program; and UCLA SafeRide provides complimentary evening transportation upon request from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Report suspicious incidents to the police by calling the non-emergency line: (310) 825-1491.
- Call 911 anytime you feel unsafe. You can also download the Bruins Safe app to contact campus staff quickly, report concerns and access important resources.
- Protect your possessions. Follow UCPD’s tips to register your bike or scooter through the Bike Index. Lock up your bike or scooter or keep it inside. Keep a copy of your car registration and other important records.
- Participate in safety drills. UCLA Fire leads drills in undergraduate housing at unannounced times in the first quarter.
- Practice the Drop, Cover and Hold On procedure to prepare for an earthquake. The Office of Emergency Management leads our campus participation in the Great ShakeOut, the world’s largest virtual earthquake drill each fall. Review more tips to prepare for and respond to an earthquake.
- Get to know our groups on campus that offer free resources and counseling around mental health, healthy relationships, nightlife safety and more. CAPS offers counseling and drop-in hours for students. UCLA’s Staff & Faculty Counseling Center provides services for employees.
- Review our FAQs on UCLA’s Time, Place and Manner policies. These policies are in place to ensure campus safety and protect First Amendment speech.
- Maintain healthy behaviors around alcohol and be aware of safety when socializing. The CARE Program offers confidential support and resources, including free drink test strips and drink caps as part of the Secure the Sip initiative. The Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center manages the campus Narcan Distribution Project. The HEART Team provides items like masks and fentanyl test strips at several locations on campus.
- Review our safety resource links for more information on campus safety and emergency preparedness.
