The Office of Campus and Community Safety was founded in 2024, with the aim to maintain safety and emergency management operations as top priorities on campus, as UCLA’s reach and mission continue to grow. Campus and Community Safety staff, whether a part of the police department or the Office of Emergency Management, seek to elevate a collaborative, community-based approach to campus safety. The office also serves as a connector within our community, with a focus on communication between students, faculty, staff, community groups, UCLA departments and our personnel as a key element of a safe campus.

About the Office of Emergency Management
The Office of Emergency Management works to ensure that UCLA is preparing for, preventing, responding to and then recovering from emergencies and disasters. The office manages the Emergency Operations Center and coordinates the university’s emergency notification (BruinALERT) process.
An Emergency Operations Center (EOC) serves as:
- an information hub: The EOC collects, analyzes, and shares critical information from various sources to form a common operating picture of the incident.
- centralized command: It provides a central location for key university personnel to make coordinated decisions, ensuring a unified and consistent response.
- resource allocator: The EOC oversees the allocation and tracking of all necessary resources, such as equipment, personnel, and supplies, to support on-scene operations.
- strategic planning: Personnel in the EOC develop strategic action plans for both the short-term response and long-term recovery phases.
- communication: The center manages communications with all departments, including the campus community, media, and external agencies.
Our Emergency Management team maintains constant situational awareness of conditions that could adversely affect the health, safety, and/or general welfare of the campus community. The team provides updates on developing situations and communicates operational changes, as well as logistics information, for large events or occurrences on campus on Bruins Safe Online.

About the UCLA Police Department
UCLA Police are duly sworn California peace officers, who possess the same authority as municipal officers. Our jurisdiction includes not just campus, but also Westwood.
We are a part of the statewide UC Police system of about 410 sworn personnel. We take pride in our cultural and ethnic diversity and strive to employ a broad cross-section of the community. The department employs about 65 sworn officers, 41 civilians and 130 students.
Working with Students
We work closely with students. Our department includes about 100 student Community Service Officers who serve as community liaisons for the department and run the Evening Escort program, among many other duties. Each CSO works a minimum of 15 hours a week. The department also includes about 20 students EMTs.
A Standard of Excellence
Our dispatch center is staffed 24/7 with a team of 14 full-time Public Safety Dispatchers. Our department includes two K-9 officers who are trained in patrol and bomb detection.
The department is composed of highly trained units and special assignments: a Detective unit, Crime Prevention unit, Threat Management unit, Special Events and Community Engagement units and more.
We set a standard of excellence in law enforcement and serve a multicultural, educational environment of over 82,500 faculty, staff and students in Los Angeles.
Public Safety
The Department is linked to city, state and federal criminal justice agencies databases, which provide access to criminal records, wanted persons, stolen property and vehicle information. All crimes reported to the Department are thoroughly investigated and referred for prosecution through the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office or Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office. Criminal and non-criminal matters involving university students may also be referred to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action.

The men and women of the UCLA Police Department proudly serve this community with a firm commitment to our Core Values:
