Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) identifies concerning behaviors in and around the UCLA community, assesses the risk and intervenes early to prevent harm. Formerly the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), BTAM is now part of the Office of Campus and Community Safety.
Contact BTAM if you believe a faculty or staff member, or someone not affiliated with UCLA, may harm themselves or others, or may seriously disrupt the campus environment. Behavior does not need to be illegal to be of concern.

BIT Is Now BTAM
The UCLA Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) is now Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM). The new name aligns with national best practices in the field and reflects the work the team does every day.
BTAM has also joined the UCLA Office of Campus and Community Safety. The integration strengthens our shared mission: a secure, supportive, and resilient university environment for every member of the UCLA community.
Behavioral Awareness: Your Role
Targeted violence is rarely sudden. People who move toward violence often show warning signs first, and coworkers, supervisors, and colleagues are usually the first to notice. Every member of the UCLA community serves as BTAM’s eyes and ears.
BTAM asks you to stay aware, recognize concerning behavior, and report it. You don’t need proof, and you don’t need to be certain. Report what you see, and let BTAM assess it.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Threats, whether direct or veiled, spoken, written, or posted online
- Statements about harming others or references to past attacks
- Unusual interest in weapons or violence
- A grievance that becomes a fixation on a specific person, unit, or the university
- Sudden changes in behavior, mood, appearance, or job performance
- Expressions of hopelessness, desperation, or thoughts of self-harm
- Aggressive outbursts, intimidation, or harassment
Notice it. Report it. Let BTAM assess it. Call (310) 794-1248.
Our Approach
BTAM applies an evidence-based, systematic framework to campus safety. The team responds to concerning behavior with assessment and intervention strategies that promptly manage and mitigate potential threats before they escalate.
Identify
BTAM receives reports of concerning behavior from across campus and identifies behaviors of concern, potential threats, and patterns that may indicate an individual is moving toward targeted violence or other harmful behavior.
Assess
A multidisciplinary team evaluates each concern with a structured, evidence-based framework to determine the level of threat.
Manage
BTAM coordinates a proactive, multidisciplinary response with campus partners to assess and manage concerning behavior, mitigate potential threats, reduce the risk of targeted violence, and connect individuals with appropriate support and resources.
Team and Consultation
BTAM runs a centralized, multidisciplinary consultation model. Safety, human resources, legal, counseling, and health experts from across campus collaborate to address behaviors of concern early.
