Steve Lurie
Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus and Community Safety
Steve Lurie, a UCLA alumnus (B.A. in Cultural Anthropology, 1994), brings nearly three decades of distinguished law enforcement experience to his role as associate vice chancellor for campus and community safety.
Previously, AVC Lurie served for 27 years with the Los Angeles Police Department, most notably as assistant commanding officer of the West Bureau, overseeing five divisions and serving a population of approximately 940,000 Angelenos. His command responsibilities included constitutional policing and strategic leadership in response to major events. As a community-focused leader, he built a track record of strengthening relationships between law enforcement and the diverse communities they serve, earning recognition from government officials, neighborhood councils and nonprofit organizations.
In academia, AVC Lurie has served as an adjunct law professor at Loyola and Pepperdine law schools and taught in the criminal justice master’s program at USC. Additionally, he has been a member of the California State Bar for more than two decades and is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy (Class of 2016).
Now UCLA’s chief safety officer, AVC Lurie began his law enforcement career decades ago, while he was a student — as a community service officer with the UCLA Police Department.
