What this is
Associate Vice Chancellor Steve Lurie sets aside time each week to meet with UCLA students one-on-one. He leads the Office of Campus and Community Safety, which means he is responsible for how UCLA prepares for, responds to, and recovers from emergencies and incidents affecting the campus community.
You do not need a specific subject, a prepared agenda, or a reason to be there. Ask a question, raise a concern, pitch an idea, or find out how a decision got made. The conversation is yours to direct.
When and where
Tuesdays
11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Every other week, beginning Oct. 13
Wednesdays
4 – 5 p.m.
Every other week, beginning Oct. 21
Walk-ins are welcome, and we keep a slot open for you. Every session runs four 15-minute appointments. Three are bookable in advance. The fourth stays open for whoever walks in that day, first come, first served.
That means you can show up without a plan and still be seen. It also means one walk-in slot goes fast. If you want a guaranteed time with AVC Lurie, reserve one in advance. It takes about a minute.

What students bring
- Questions about campus safety programs, resources, or decisions
- Concerns about a specific location, route, or time of day
- Ideas for how UCLA should approach safety differently
- Questions about emergency alerts and how BruinALERT works
- Feedback on something you experienced on or near campus
- Curiosity — plenty of students come just to understand how it all works
What students raise here shapes what OCCS prioritizes. These conversations are not a formality.

Questions about logistics
For scheduling help, accessibility accommodations, or anything else about getting to a session, email OCCSofficehours@conet.ucla.edu.
Send accommodation requests — including ASL interpretation, CART captioning, an alternate meeting location, or a virtual option — at least three business days before a session so we can confirm arrangements before you arrive.
If you need help now
Student Office Hours are a conversation, not a reporting channel. If you are in danger, witnessing a crime, or need an immediate response, contact UCPD directly.
Common questions
Do I have to book an appointment?
No. Every session keeps one 15-minute slot open for walk-ins, so you can stop by without booking. There is only one of them per session and it goes first come, first served — booking ahead is the only way to guarantee time.
How long do I get?
Fifteen minutes, and longer if the schedule allows that day.
Do I need to prepare anything?
No. Bring a question, a concern, an idea, or nothing at all. There is no format and no expectation.
Why do the days change from week to week?
Sessions alternate between Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons so students with different class schedules can reach them. Check the session dates above, or the booking page, for the next open time.
Can I come with a friend or as a group?
Yes. If you are bringing more than two or three people, book an appointment and note the group size so we can plan the time.
Is what I say confidential?
Office hours are an open, informal conversation and are not a confidential reporting channel. Certain disclosures, including some crimes and Title IX matters, carry reporting obligations. If you need a confidential resource, AVC Lurie will connect you with the right office.
Will my concern get resolved?
Every conversation informs how OCCS sets priorities, and AVC Lurie will tell you directly what can and cannot happen. Office hours are not a formal reporting or investigation process, and no outcome is guaranteed.
What if none of the times work for me?
Email OCCSofficehours@conet.ucla.edu. We will look for another time or point you to the right person.
